On August 12, 2026, at the Šianec vineyard above Hlohovec, a unique astronomical event will take place. Visitors will witness a partial solar eclipse, connected with a rare “double twilight,” and after darkness falls – a night astro party with observation of the Perseids meteor shower.
The program will start at 6:00 PM. Professional observation equipment will be prepared for the public, accompanied by expert explanations from lecturers. The main event of the evening program is the partial solar eclipse, which will begin at 7:19 PM, when the Moon first enters the solar disk. At 8:05 PM, the maximum phase of the eclipse will occur, during which the Moon will cover up to 77% of the Sun. Four minutes later, the Sun will set directly during the eclipse. This sunset will create a rare phenomenon known as “double twilight.”
After the sunset, the program will move to the second part. Between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM, there will be an expert lecture, after which the observation of the peak of the popular Perseids meteor shower will begin, lasting until 11:00 PM. Besides the “shooting stars,” astronomers will show the most interesting objects of the summer night sky and answer questions about the origin of meteor showers. Visitors are recommended to bring a blanket or a sleeping mat and a flashlight for the way home.
The organizers emphasize safety during observation. Looking at the Sun without protective equipment can cause permanent eye damage. Certified solar glasses will be available for purchase on site for 4 euros. Specially adapted astro telescopes will also be available, through which you can photograph the event with your own mobile phone or camera.
