The Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater in Kyiv presents “Macbeth”—Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, reimagined in the context of modern-day Ukraine. The production explores themes of power, tyranny, and manipulation, reflecting the realities of war and information warfare.
Director Ivan Uryvsky transposes the action into a world of hybrid warfare, media manipulation, and relentless informational pressure. In the play, the witches are transformed into omnipresent technological entities—three screens that monitor, record, and influence the characters’ actions, symbolizing evil that manifests through the language of news, algorithms, and manipulated emotions.
This production is a unique encounter between Shakespearean drama and contemporary reality, raising questions about the consequences of victory, returning from war, and preventing the transformation of power into tyranny. The performance is in Ukrainian with Slovak and English subtitles.
