The fire engulfed an area of 1,800 square meters on Wednesday evening. It proved difficult to contain the blaze due to the rugged terrain. The incident greatly alarmed local residents, who watched plumes of smoke rise directly above their residential neighborhoods.
How Rescuers Battled the Blaze
Standard firefighting equipment could not reach the source of the fire due to the steep slopes and rocky terrain. Rescuers had to proceed with extreme caution and call in special units from several cities in the region.
Professional firefighting units from Dolný Kubín, Ružomberok, Liptovský Mikuláš, and Žilina, as well as a rescue team from the regional capital, arrived at the scene promptly.
Volunteer Assistance and the Scale of the Response
Overall, the cleanup effort required the coordination of a large number of people and equipment. In addition to the professionals, volunteer fire brigades also joined the firefighting efforts.
Local teams participated in fighting the fire:
- DHZO Dolný Kubín – Záskalie
- Jasenová
- Leštiny
- Vyšný Kubín
- Likavka
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of all response teams, the fire was brought under control, although the exact amount of damage caused has not yet been determined. The cause of the fire also remains unknown—specialists are conducting further inspections and investigations. Forestry workers and environmentalists are reminding the public of the increased danger during dry weather, when even the smallest spark can cause a large-scale disaster in forested areas.
