NBU eased currency restrictions and set new limits for Ukrainians abroad

On August 11, 2026, a large package of easing currency restrictions from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) came into effect. For Ukrainians living in Slovakia, the change is noticeable: paying rent, buying euros, and withdrawing cash from Ukrainian accounts is now possible in much larger amounts than before.

What exactly has changed

The main thing — the limit for purchasing non-cash foreign currency increased four times: from 50,000 UAH to 200,000 UAH per calendar month. Within this limit, it is now possible to buy non-cash bank metals and securities of foreign issuers. If you are used to converting hryvnia to euros for living here, our currency converter will help you estimate how much it is at the current rate.

The daily limit for withdrawing cash currency from accounts — both in Ukraine and abroad — has doubled: from 100,000 UAH to 200,000 UAH equivalent per day.

Payments abroad and rent

For those who rent housing in Slovakia and pay from a Ukrainian account, the news is especially practical. The limit for payment of goods, works, and services abroad from hryvnia accounts has increased from 100,000 UAH to 200,000 UAH per month, and now this limit also includes rent payments. By the way, you can pay not only by card but also by direct transfer from account to account, including via SWIFT.

For currency accounts, a separate new limit was introduced — 200,000 UAH per month for transfers abroad to pay for goods and services. And the existing limit of 500,000 UAH per month for paying accommodation services abroad from a currency card now also applies to rent payments, and such payments can also be made by direct transfer.

The ability to pay with currency cards abroad without restrictions remains — except for certain categories of operations.

Why NBU decided to ease restrictions

According to the regulator's statement, the main focus of the package is support for the population. NBU emphasizes that the easing does not create risks for the currency market: the decision is already included in the macro forecast, which predicts growth of Ukraine's international reserves to almost 70 billion dollars in 2026.

The package also affected business: limits on cash withdrawals from corporate accounts were increased and opportunities for exporters to pay fines and penalties to non-residents were expanded, writes LIGA ZAKON.

What this means in practice

In short, the key new figures are:

  • Purchase of non-cash currency — up to 200,000 UAH per month (was 50,000).
  • Cash currency withdrawal — up to 200,000 UAH per day (was 100,000).
  • Payment for goods, services, and rent abroad from a hryvnia account — up to 200,000 UAH per month.
  • Transfers from currency accounts abroad for goods and services — separate limit of 200,000 UAH per month.
  • Rent payment from a currency account — within the limit of 500,000 UAH per month for accommodation services.

If you pay rent in Slovakia by transfer, check with your Ukrainian bank how exactly it processes payments under the new rules: banks may handle SWIFT transfers differently and charge fees. And one more nuance — limits are counted in hryvnia equivalent, so with exchange rate fluctuations the real amount in euros may differ slightly.
