That many Ukrainian citizens had the status dočasné útočisko (temporary shelter) in Slovakia at the end of June 2026. Their number increased by 2,040 people in a month — these data are provided by Eurostat in the latest statistics.
Per capita, this is 27.2 Ukrainians with temporary protection per 1,000 inhabitants of the country. In the entire European Union, only the Czech Republic (35.8) has a higher rate, while the EU average is 9.8 per 1,000. Simply put: every thirty-seventh resident of Slovakia today is a Ukrainian under temporary protection.
What the overall picture looks like in the EU
At the end of June 2026, 4.41 million people who left Ukraine had temporary protection in EU countries. The most were accepted by Germany (1,286,230), Poland (961,170), and the Czech Republic (390,810).
In a month, the number of people under protection increased in 24 of the 27 EU countries. The largest increases were in Italy (+4,115), the Czech Republic (+3,835), and Germany (+2,960). In Poland, on the contrary, there were 6,335 fewer people; small decreases were also recorded in Belgium and Ireland.
New rules for men: what changed from August 6
From August 6, 2026, Slovakia introduced new requirements for Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 who apply for a new or repeated dočasné útočisko (temporary shelter) application. As reported by the Ministry of the Interior of Slovakia, the applicant must now prove that they fulfill their military obligations in Ukraine.
This requirement follows a joint decision of the EU Council, so similar rules are appearing in other union countries.
How to confirm fulfillment of military obligations
This can be confirmed in two ways:
Foreign passport with a stamp. A valid passport with a mark of crossing the Ukrainian border, placed no earlier than 90 days before submitting the application.
Document from the Rezerv+ application. An electronic military registration document in paper form with an official translation into Slovak or English.
There is a nuance with the Rezerv+ document. If it is not certified by the Ukrainian consulate, the migration police officer will check the data directly in the app on your phone. Screenshots and photos will not be accepted — so before the visit, install the app, log in, and charge your phone.
Requirements differ by age
18–22 years old. It is enough to show registration in the Rezerv+ application.
23–60 years old. Proof of removal from military registration or exemption from military service is required — simple registration in the app is not enough for this age group.
If you have already received temporary protection in Slovakia before, the new rules do not apply to you — your status does not change. Only those who apply for the first time or again after August 6, 2026, must confirm fulfillment of military obligations, writes Aktuality.sk.
And if someone in your family is only planning to move to Slovakia or is returning after a break, prepare the documents in advance. It is better to do the translation of the military registration document and consulate verification not on the last day.
