An evening walk with your dog in Košice can quickly turn into an unexpected adventure if you encounter a wild animal along the way. A resident named Ivana shared this experience on the Košicak.sk website, recounting how she came across a full-grown fox while walking her dog on Jakoby Street. The animal approached her within a few steps, raising concerns about the safety of pets.
Be careful with dogs walked off-leash
An experienced dog owner warned her neighbors to be more careful with their four-legged friends, especially if they walk them off-leash. According to her, the curious fox was standing just two steps away from her dog and five steps away from her.
Other city residents chimed in, confirming that the appearance of wild animals in Košice’s neighborhoods is nothing new. Resident Michaela noted that on SNP Street or in the Sever neighborhood, she regularly sees not only martens and weasels but also young foxes. This year’s well-fed young animals often look like adults; they are hungry, curious, and show almost no fear of people or dogs.
Dog-Walking Rules and the Police Response
The discussion under the post quickly brought up the long-standing issue of dog owners’ responsibility in an urban environment. Several local residents pointed out that dogs in the city must be kept on a leash, and that official dog-walking areas are designated for free movement, while the surrounding meadows and forests are better suited for walks in nature.
If you encounter a fox while walking in the city, experts and residents recommend following a few basic rules:
- Keep a safe distance and do not try to catch or feed the animal.
- Keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from chasing wildlife, which could result in injury to your pet or the transmission of diseases.
- Contact the Košice Municipal Police at 159 if the fox shows signs of injury, behaves unusually, or poses a direct threat to those around it.
