A German discount retailer is preparing for a major expansion in the eastern part of the country. Instead of empty promises, the company has officially confirmed the launch of a new branch in Košice, which will be located on Bardejovská Street. The store is scheduled to open in the first half of next year.
For residents of this Slovak metropolis, this means yet another convenient location for daily shopping. The question of whether a new supermarket is needed in this part of the city has been debated for years, as similar stores are already operating nearby on Moldavská cesta, Popradská, and Pri Prachárni. Despite discussions about market saturation in the area, the project has successfully completed all necessary preparatory stages.
What is known about the upcoming construction
Metropolia has been preparing to implement the project for a long time. Back in November 2025, the Košice City Council officially approved the lease of land plots to Lidl Slovenská republika based on an official resolution (Resolution No. 971).
The complex will cover an area of 2,686 square meters. The project encompasses not only the store building itself but also the associated infrastructure:
- the expansion and redesign of adjacent local utility networks;
- the establishment of convenient transportation access;
- construction of new sidewalks;
- the creation of a safe crosswalk at the intersection of Bardejovská and Michalovská Streets.
Staff Recruitment and Network Expansion
Preparations for the launch are also evident in the job market. The job listings on the Profesia portal have already been updated with openings from the retail chain. The company is actively recruiting for new positions, specifically seeking sales associates, cashiers, assistants, and assistant store managers. The exact opening date has not yet been announced, but company representatives promise to provide advance notice.
In addition to Košice, the chain is working on new locations in other parts of the country. Construction has already begun in Krásne nad Kysucou, and completion is scheduled for next year. By the end of this year, the company plans to open its first branch in Sládkovičovo and its third store in Gelnica.
In particular, the retail chain is updating its product range and introducing new services in its supermarkets. Shoppers can already find the specialized Max & Mila’s World line of pet products, divided into the Basic, Advanced Care, and Gourmet categories, as well as a test section for vitamins and supplements right on the sales floor.
