The highlands of Slovakia were unexpectedly greeted by a real winter. Due to an influx of cold and moist air from the northwest, the first significant snowfall occurred on the mountain ranges.
A continuous snow cover had formed by Tuesday morning at elevations ranging from approximately 1,400 to 1,600 meters above sea level. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute reported this year’s early return of winter.
Winter Conditions and Freezing Temperatures in the Mountains
At the highest points of the Tatra Mountains, the layer of fresh snow reaches 20–27 centimeters. In the Western Tatras, approximately 15 centimeters were measured, while in the Low Tatras, there is about 10 centimeters of snow on the ground.
Temperatures at higher elevations have dropped below zero and range from zero to minus five degrees Celsius. The situation is complicated by strong winds, with gusts reaching 20–25 meters per second above the tree line. The wind chill at the highest points has dropped to minus 12 degrees.
Warning for Hikers
The Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) strongly advises all mountain visitors not to underestimate the situation and to adapt their gear accordingly.
Winter Gear: Given the icy terrain and snowdrifts, rescuers advise carrying at least hiking poles and anti-slip crampons.
Warm clothing: A good-quality hat, gloves, and layered clothing are essential.

However, according to meteorologists’ forecasts, this winter idyll will last only a moment. A significant warming is expected by the end of the week, causing the snow cover in the Tatras to disappear completely and quickly.
