During a three-car collision on Monday on Route I/18 near the village of Halovany in the district of Liptovský Mikuláš, police detected alcohol in the blood of a driver who was supposed to be setting an example of compliance with traffic rules. The driving instructor, who was teaching a new student to drive at the time, had a blood alcohol level of 0.81 per mille.
The accident occurred just about 500 meters from the site of a previous serious traffic accident. According to preliminary information from the Regional Police Directorate in Žilina, the driver of a VW Transporter commercial vehicle failed to maintain a safe following distance and crashed into a Škoda vehicle belonging to the driving school that was traveling ahead of him. The impact pushed the driving school car forward, and it collided with an Alfa Romeo that was slowing down.
Although breathalyzer tests for the drivers of the Transporter and the Alfa Romeo—and even for the student behind the wheel of the driving school car—came back negative, the instructor blew nearly one per mille. The police are continuing to investigate the case, which has once again raised questions about the responsibility of professionals when training future drivers.
