After a sharp drop in temperatures, rain, and the first snow in the highlands, the weather in Slovakia is set for another shift. The end of September and the beginning of October will be marked by a stable, dry, and truly warm Indian summer. According to meteorologists and climatologists, daytime temperatures at the turn of the month will reach +25 °C, and this warm trend may persist throughout most of October.
From Nighttime Frosts to “Summer Days”
September presented Slovak residents with two stark contrasts: after a hot start to the month, a sudden cold snap brought frosts in the lowlands and snowfall in the Tatra Mountains. However, the weather is now stabilizing thanks to a large high-pressure system (anticyclone) over Central Europe.
The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) notes that the high-pressure system is blocking the movement of cold fronts from the west and directing warm air from the south and southwest toward the region.
According to climatologist Dalibor Výberči’s forecast, so-called “summer days” (when the daytime high exceeds +25 °C) are expected in the lowlands starting early next week:
Monday, September 28: +19 °C to +25 °C.
Tuesday, September 29: from +20 °C to +26 °C.
Late September–early October: In the warmest regions (in southern and western Slovakia), temperatures will remain steady around +25 °C. In mountainous areas (Orava, Podtatransko), it will be slightly cooler—around +16...+18 °C.

SHMÚ experts remind us that Indian summer is a traditional meteorological feature of fall, characterized by dry and windless weather, but with significant daily temperature fluctuations.
While daytime temperatures will warm up to a comfortable +20...+25 °C, they will cool down more quickly after clear nights. The difference between morning and daytime temperatures can range from 15 to 18 degrees. As a result, dense fog and low cloud cover are possible in the valleys in the morning and before noon, and ground frosts may occur in the coldest areas.
Preliminary Forecast: How Long Will the Warm Weather Last?
According to the extended forecast from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the abnormally warm weather may persist:
The week of September 28 through October 4: A high-pressure system will bring sunny weather with average daytime highs of around +20...+25 °C throughout Central Europe.
First half of October (through October 11–15): Models do not indicate a sharp drop in temperatures. Temperatures will remain above the long-term average.
According to meteorological observations, a classic Indian summer usually lasts from a few days to two weeks. However, history also records exceptional cases: in 1959, a period of anticyclonic dry heat in Central Europe lasted continuously for nearly seven weeks.
