Instead of a usual stop at the gas station, the driver of an SUV in Bratislava experienced a car theft right before his eyes, which was followed by a real chase through the city streets. The unsuccessful trip ended with a collision and a police arrest camera.
The incident happened on Sunday evening, September 27, at a gas station on Hečkova Street in Bratislava. A 56-year-old citizen of Georgia noticed an unlocked Land Cruiser car, got behind the wheel without hesitation, and drove away.
The vehicle owner was not left alone with the problem: other gas station customers came to help. Together with the victim, they got into a Volkswagen Passat and rushed to chase the thief through the capital's streets.
The fugitive in the stolen SUV began to maneuver chaotically, blatantly ignoring traffic signs and creating dangerous situations for other drivers. The wild ride did not last long: around 8:15 PM, the man lost control and crashed into the Volkswagen Passat that was chasing him.
Immediately after the collision, concerned witnesses and the owner blocked the thief at the scene and waited for the patrol to arrive.
The police detained the 56-year-old man, took him to the station, and later placed him in temporary detention. As Michal Szeiff, the spokesperson for Bratislava police, reported, the detainee has already been officially charged with unauthorized use of someone else's car and property damage.
