The police detained a driver at one of the summer festivals in Slovakia: the test showed that the man was driving under the influence of drugs. Marijuana was found in his car, and now instead of music and a weekend, he faces a criminal case.

The story told by Slovak media is typical for the summer season. A patrol stopped the car near the festival location, the driver behaved suspiciously, and the police conducted a drug test. The result was positive. During the vehicle inspection, marijuana was also found. A criminal case was opened against the man for driving under the influence of a narcotic substance.

What happens for this in Slovakia

Slovakia operates a zero-tolerance principle: unlike alcohol, where there is some limit for the body, for drugs there is no permissible norm at all. Even traces of the substance in the test mean that the driver's license is taken away immediately on the spot.

Then the formal part begins:

  • Fine up to €1000 for driving under the influence.

  • Driving ban from 1 year, and in case of repeated violation or accident, the terms increase significantly.

  • Criminal liability if driving under the influence caused an accident or threat to people — here it is not about a fine, but about a criminal charge.

It is also worth remembering a nuance: traces of cannabis in the body can be detected days after use. So “I smoked last week” is not an argument for the Slovak test.
