This Friday, August 28, 2026, a rare partial lunar eclipse will be visible in Slovakia. This phenomenon, when the Moon almost completely enters the Earth's shadow, promises to be spectacular, as up to 93% of its disk will be darkened.
When and where to observe the eclipse
The eclipse will begin at 03:24 local time, and from 04:34 the Moon will start to take on a noticeable reddish tint. This happens because sunlight passes through the Earth's atmosphere, where blue shades scatter, and red and orange reach the Moon's surface, creating the "blood Moon" effect.
The peak of the eclipse in Bratislava will be at 06:13, but due to dawn, the full picture will not be visible, as the Moon will set below the horizon within a few minutes. The best time for observation is between 04:30 and 05:30 in the morning. For more detailed observation, binoculars or a small telescope can be used.
Other astronomical events in 2026
Besides the lunar eclipse, other interesting astronomical phenomena await Slovakia by the end of 2026. Among them are meteor showers, two comets, and opportunities to observe planets, Jupiter's moons, and Saturn's rings. For example, in August there was already a partial solar eclipse and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.
