Last night, some regions of Slovakia experienced unusual frosts for the season. The cause was cold, dry air and almost clear skies, reported by the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ).

Where was it the coldest?

According to the official SHMÚ network, the lowest temperature was at the Čierny Váh station: -1 °C. Temperatures also dropped below zero in the areas of Mlynky and Oravská Polhora.

But this is not the lowest reading. The Meteotekov & Lovci mrazov station network recorded temperatures down to -7 °C at the Veľká Poľana station. This is much colder than the average values for this period from 1991-2020.

Why is this important?

Even short-term frosts unusual for the season can harm agriculture and affect infrastructure, especially in mountain areas. Usually, autumn nights in Slovakia are milder, although it is always colder in the mountains.

Such local temperature anomalies are recorded thanks to a dense network of weather stations. This shows how different the weather can be even in neighboring valleys, which is important to consider when traveling.

Forecast for the coming nights

According to forecasts, the next nights will not be as cold. However, if you are going to the mountains, remember that the weather there can change sharply, and frosts in some valleys occur even in summer.
