In 1991, the average Slovak man married at 25.6 years old, and the woman at 22.9. Today it is almost 35 years for men and 32.1 for women. Over thirty years, the average age of first marriage has risen by about ten years, and the number of weddings is steadily falling — these are the data from the Statistical Office of Slovakia, cited by SITA in their article.
In 2021, fewer than 26.4 thousand marriages were registered in the country — this is lower than the figures of the 90s, when 27.5–28 thousand couples married each year. The pandemic year 2020 greatly reduced the statistics: only 23.8 thousand weddings. The youngest couples still marry in the Prešov Region (Prešovský kraj), the oldest in the Bratislava Region (Bratislavský kraj).
Why they postpone: money, education, housing
Demographers name several reasons, and they work together. Young people study longer, first want to build a career and become financially stable, and the issue of own housing or rent in Slovakia is solved later each year. At the same time, the number of couples living together for years without official registration of their relationship (živnosť — trade license; OSVČ — self-employed person) is growing — social pressure to “get married” has almost disappeared.
A separate issue is the price of the wedding itself. For a couple starting adult life, this is an amount that must be saved for years or borrowed.
How much does a wedding cost in Slovakia
According to wedding organizers, the average cost of a celebration for 50–80 guests today ranges from 8,000 to 15,000 euros. A smaller wedding with up to 30 guests costs 4,000–7,000 euros, and a large one with a hundred or more invited easily exceeds 14,000–22,000 euros, especially in the capital.
More than half of the budget is eaten up by hall rental and catering: the menu per guest in the standard segment costs 55–90 euros. Then come the photographer (900–1800 euros), music band, clothes, and decor — and the bill grows quickly.
The region also matters. In Bratislava and its surroundings, prices for services and rental are 20–40% higher than in rural areas or smaller towns, for example in the Prešovský or Košice Regions. The same celebration in the east of the country will cost noticeably less.
What they choose instead
The market has already responded to couples’ fatigue from “weddings for 150 people for the sake of relatives.” Two formats are gaining popularity:
Intimate weddings for 30–50 closest people. Fewer guests mean less spending on menu and hall, and the budget can be directed to quality, not scale.
Elopement — a ceremony just for two or with two witnesses, often in an unusual place: in the mountains, by a lake, abroad. Slovakia with the Tatras is perfect for this, so the format is quickly becoming popular.
What this means for Ukrainians in Slovakia
This trend concerns not only Slovaks. Ukrainian couples living here and planning to officially register their relationship face the same realities: prices for halls and catering are the same for everyone, and the financial cushion of displaced persons is usually even thinner.
The practical side is simple. If the goal is legal registration of marriage (which is often needed for documents, shared housing, or status), the ceremony at a government office costs symbolic money, and a luxurious banquet is not included. Celebrations today are quite accepted to be intimate: this is a general European trend that Slovaks adopted earlier than us, not forced economy.
