An 18-year-old student carrying a knife at a school in Veľké Kapušany was placed in preventive detention
On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, a serious incident occurred at the United School in Veľké Kapušany: an 18-year-old student named Marko L. suddenly grabbed a knife during class and threatened to “stab someone.” Thanks to the quick reaction of the teacher, who managed to disarm him, a tragedy was averted.
The incident did not end there. The enraged student began threatening the teacher himself, then fled the classroom and the school. Law enforcement officers quickly located and detained Marko L. A judge from the Michalovce District Court ruled to place him in preventívna väzba (preventive detention). There is reasonable suspicion that he may continue his criminal activity or complete the crime he attempted to commit. The defendant filed an appeal against this decision, which will be reviewed by the Regional Court in Košice.
Maroš Žilinka, Prosecutor General of the Slovak Republic, commented on the incident, stating that law enforcement agencies will respond uncompromisingly to such cases, which are becoming increasingly frequent. This incident occurred shortly after another tragic event in September 2026 in Staškov, where a 13-year-old student attacked teachers and classmates with a knife. This resulted in the deaths of a teacher and a student. These cases highlight the growing problem of violence in Slovakian educational institutions.
