As a result, Ukrainians and other residents of Slovakia will be able to continue saving on their trips. The government has allocated nearly 14 million euros to extend the program. Read more about transportation in Slovakia and how it works in our guide.
Why did the government extend the discounts?
The main reason is high fuel prices, which are putting a strain on family budgets. The prime minister explained that reducing fuel taxes would not have produced the desired result. Therefore, the government decided to directly subsidize ticket prices for passengers. It is noted that other European countries are adopting this approach as well.
The Ministry of Transportation initiated the extension and considers this measure a success. The Ministry of Finance will allocate the following funds for this purpose:
- 5.3 million euros to compensate rail carriers.
- Over 8.5 million euros for higher territorial units (VÚC) and regional capitals to subsidize bus services.
Which modes of transportation are covered by the discount?
The 50% discount does not apply to all public transportation. Here’s exactly where you can save:
-
Rail Transport The discount applies to second-class tickets on passenger trains operating in the public interest. This primarily refers to the national carrier, ZSSK.
-
Bus transportation The discount applies to two types of bus routes:
-
Regional (suburban) buses operated by self-governing regions (VÚC).
-
Urban public transit (MHD) in eight regional capitals: Bratislava, Košice, Prešov, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Nitra, Trenčín, and Trnava.
All previous discounts for students, seniors, and other groups remain in effect. This 50% discount is intended for passengers who pay the full fare.
How do you use the discount?
No special action is required. Ticket prices at ticket offices, ticket machines, and carriers’ online apps are already listed with the 50% discount applied.
As a reminder, the discount for trains has been in effect since October 1, and for buses since October 12. Both promotions will now run through November 30, 2026. This will help you save money on daily commutes to work or school, as well as when traveling around Slovakia.
The prime minister also hinted that the government may extend the subsidies further if fuel prices do not drop. Therefore, it is possible that the discounts will remain in effect through December.
