It might seem that the neglected space between garages doesn’t harm anyone, but in practice, such spots often become a magnet for criminal activity. Residents of Bratislava often view such places as merely an unsightly aesthetic problem, but local authorities have begun to crack down on illegal activities related to drug trafficking.

How the dangerous area was eliminated

A long-standing hotbed of antisocial behavior within the Bratislava - Nové Mesto district is finally a thing of the past. The area in the alley between the garages on Kukučínova Street drew attention due to reports that narcotic and psychotropic substances were regularly sold there.

To address this problem, the municipality joined forces with the Slovak Republic Railways (Železnice Slovenskej republiky). After removing hazardous and dilapidated structures, workers from the utility company EKO podnik VPS joined the effort and completely cleared the area of debris. The local government decided not to disclose detailed reports on those detained or the specifics of police operations at this location, but the results of the cleanup are evident.

What other locations have been cleaned up in the district?

Kukučínova Street is by no means an isolated case. Recently, the district administration has undertaken a systematic cleanup of several similar locations that were compromising the safety and comfort of residents:

  • Garage areas on Filiálka Street and Gavlovičova Street.
  • A neglected area between the tracks in the Zátišie neighborhood.
  • The site of the former Ovozelok market and warehouse.

A common problem in all these areas was their state of neglect, which created ideal hiding places for illegal activity. The authorities’ goal is to eliminate any uncontrolled “blind spots” in the city.

Comprehensive Safety Measures

Clearing the area of construction debris and overgrown vegetation is only the first step. Officials in Nové Město assure that the fight against crime risks will continue using several parallel measures:

  1. Mobile patrols. The city police will significantly increase the number of patrols in problem neighborhoods.
  2. Social support. Plans are in place to increase the number of social workers providing support on the streets.
  3. Technical monitoring. The district is gradually expanding its network of surveillance cameras and improving the street lighting system, as well as engaging a nighttime security service.
