Dangerous bedbugs are infesting Bratislava: an infestation has been reported in high-rise buildings in Vrakuň

A serious problem with household pests is unfolding in the capital of Slovakia. In the Vrakuňa district, several apartment buildings are at risk of a large-scale bed bug infestation. Authorities are urging residents to undergo comprehensive pest control and warn that inaction by even a single neighbor could undermine the efforts of the entire building.

Martin Kuruc, the mayor of Vrakuňa, reported the alarming situation on his Facebook page after the administration began receiving a flood of complaints from residents of buildings on Rajecká Street (Rajecká 4, 6, and 8).

The main obstacle: irresponsible neighbors

According to the mayor, no one is immune to bedbugs. However, the key to successfully solving the problem is 100% cooperation from all residents.

Experts note that pest control must be carried out simultaneously in all apartments within a building. If even one owner refuses to let the exterminators in or ignores the problem, bedbugs will easily migrate through ventilation systems, pipes, and cracks in the walls, returning even to places where they have already been successfully eliminated.

Currently, district authorities have sought official recommendations from the Public Health Office of the Slovak Republic (Úrad verejného zdravotníctva SR) and are negotiating with the property management company to find a legal and effective mechanism to resolve the crisis.

How can you identify a bed bug, and where does it hide?

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown blood-sucking parasites. An adult is about the size of an apple seed, but it grows larger and darker after feeding.

During the day, they hide in dark, narrow places, usually near sleeping areas:

  • in bed frames, mattresses, and upholstered furniture;

  • in wall crevices, under baseboards, and behind wallpaper;

  • in old or used furniture;

  • in suitcases after traveling.

They can enter an apartment not only from neighbors but also from hotels, dormitories, or even through textiles on public transportation.

Symptoms and Early Signs of Infestation

Experts urge you to contact disinfection specialists immediately if you notice the following warning signs:

  1. Traces on bedding: tiny bloodstains or small black specks (feces) on sheets and mattresses.

  2. Waste products: microscopic eggs or shed insect exoskeletons.

  3. Bites: itchy marks appearing on the skin after sleeping (reactions vary—from severe irritation to almost imperceptible dots).

  4. Odor: a distinctive, unusual, sweetish-unpleasant odor in the room.

Experts emphasize: folk remedies and household sprays against bed bugs are usually ineffective. At the first signs of a bed bug infestation, you should act immediately and call in professional pest control services.
