Is it safe to drink tap water in Slovakia: what do ratings and official services say

Slovakia ranked 28th in the world ranking of drinking water quality with 87.6 points out of 100. This is higher than in neighboring Poland (77.8), the Czech Republic (72.8), and Hungary (71.4), but far from leaders like Austria (99.2) or Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, and Finland – which received a full 100 points. Why not top 10? The main reason is groundwater pollution. Agriculture (nitrates from fertilizers), industry, and drought have the biggest impact. Drought increases the concentration of harmful substances. Authorities assure that water from centralized systems is completely safe. The Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic says that over 99% of water supply systems meet EU standards. Monitoring is constant at all stages: from the source to the tap. They check microbiology, chemistry, heavy metals, and pesticides. About 80% of the country's drinking water is underground, well-protected, and naturally filtered. So why do people buy bottled water? The main reason is hardness. The high content of calcium and magnesium is even healthy, but it causes household problems: * Limescale (vodný kameň). It settles on kettles, coffee makers, washing machines, and water heaters – damaging appliances and increasing electricity costs. * Spots and streaks on dishes, glass, and plumbing fixtures. * Household chemicals. Detergents foam less in hard water, so you have to use more. Hardness greatly depends on the region. In the west (Bratislava, Trnava, Nitra), the water is the hardest; in the east and center, it is softer or medium. The reason is geology: water passes through limestone rocks and becomes saturated with minerals. As a result, it is safe to drink tap water in Slovakia, and it meets sanitary standards.
