With the approach of autumn in Slovakia, the season of "visits" by bats to human homes has begun, lasting until early October. These bats (Chiroptera) look for places to hibernate, sometimes flying into houses. Although this is a natural phenomenon, it is important to know how to behave with such guests, as they can carry infections, and their bones are very fragile.
What to do if a bat (Chiroptera) flies into your home?
If you find a bat (Chiroptera) in your home, do not panic. Usually, it will find its way out by itself.

- Open a window. Create a path for the animal to fly out.
- Turn off the light. Bats (Chiroptera) navigate in the dark, and light can disorient them.
- Leave the room. Give the bat (Chiroptera) peace so it can fly out on its own.
If the bat (Chiroptera) does not leave the room voluntarily, it needs help, but you should do this carefully. Never take a bat (Chiroptera) with bare hands. Always use thick gloves, a towel, or a cloth.
Health risks and safety
Bats (Chiroptera) can carry various infections, information about which is not always easy to find in medical guides. Also, their bones and wings are extremely fragile, so any careless movement can harm the animal.
This year in Slovakia, there has been an increase in the number of bat (Chiroptera) bite cases. In July alone, 16 such cases were recorded in Bratislava, 11 in Košice, 7 each in Trnava and Žilina, and 5 each in Nitra, Trenčín, and Rožňava.
If you are bitten by a bat (Chiroptera), immediately treat the wound with an antiseptic and see a doctor.
How to prevent "visits" by bats (Chiroptera)?
The best way to avoid unwanted guests is to close windows before sleeping. This simple rule will help you avoid unpleasant surprises in the morning.
Remember that bats (Chiroptera) are part of the ecosystem, and their intrusion into your home is usually a search for a safe place to hibernate. By following these simple tips, you can safely resolve the situation and protect yourself and the animals.
