Drivers who use the D2 highway in Bratislava daily can breathe a sigh of relief. Repair work on the Lanfranconi Bridge finished earlier than planned, and traffic toward the Sitina tunnel is fully restored. The National Highway Company (Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, NDS) announced the opening of the closed section of the bridge, as well as the long-awaited exit from Botanická street.
What happened?
Repair work on the Lanfranconi Bridge, which began at the end of June 2026, was supposed to last about two months. The main phase involved replacing the expansion joint (mostný záver) — a part that takes the most load and ensures safe passage. This joint in the direction from Petržalka to the Sitina tunnel has already been replaced, after which crews moved to the opposite side.
What changes for drivers?
Starting today, August 22, 2026, NDS announced the full opening of the Lanfranconi Bridge section toward the Sitina tunnel. Traffic on the exit from Botanická street is also expected to resume, which will greatly ease movement for residents and those heading from the Karlova Ves district to the D2 highway.
NDS promises to complete all repair work on the bridge from the Petržalka side next week. This means traffic will soon be fully normalized, and drivers will be able to use the bridge without restrictions.
Context and importance of the Lanfranconi Bridge
The Lanfranconi Bridge is an important transport artery of Bratislava, part of the D2 highway. It was built between 1985 and 1991 and is the first concrete bridge over the Danube in the capital of Slovakia. About 70,000 vehicles cross it daily. The bridge is also equipped with lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, making it a key element of the city’s infrastructure.
Up-to-date information about traffic changes and possible detours can always be checked on the official NDS resources or through navigation systems. This helps avoid unexpected delays on Bratislava roads. You can learn more about the city’s and country’s transport infrastructure on our page about transport.
