A deadline overlooked on the calendar could end up costing Slovak drivers dearly. The Ministry of Transport confirmed to the TECHBYTE portal that administrative pressure on negligent car owners is not letting up, and the government is preparing new measures designed to bring greater transparency and reduce the risk of unnecessary penalties.
In 2025, approximately 94,000 cases were opened related to missing or overdue vehicle inspections.
For comparison, the current fine for an overdue vehicle inspection is 165 euros for the technical inspection and an additional 165 euros for the emissions test. Thus, the total amount of fines for a negligent car owner can reach 330 euros.
However, the authorities are preparing important relief measures and new convenient services for drivers that will help them avoid unnecessary expenses.
Automatic Vehicle Inspection Reminders Starting in January 2027
The Ministry of Transportation has confirmed that an updated automatic notification system will go into effect on January 1, 2027.
If a driver provided their email address or phone number during a routine inspection to receive an electronic report, that same contact information will be used to send an automatic reminder when the deadline for the next inspection is approaching. Drivers will no longer have to rely solely on their own memory or calendar entries.
How to set up reminders for free right now
You don’t have to wait until 2027—you can sign up for free notifications today through the Unified Road Transport Information System (JISCD.sk):
If you have an electronic ID (eID): Log in to your personal account on the portal
JISCD.skin the “Notification of TK/EK Expiration” section. The system will automatically display all vehicles registered to you.Without an electronic ID: You can set up notifications using the vehicle registration number (EČV) and the technical registration certificate number (číslo osvedčenia o evidencii).
30 days to rectify the issue instead of an immediate fine
In addition, parliament is considering an amendment to the law that proposes introducing a 30-day grace period after the inspection deadline has passed.
If the law is finally adopted, drivers who have missed the deadline will be able to undergo the inspection within one month of receiving an official warning, paying only an administrative fee of 20 euros instead of the full fine of 330 euros. This amendment is currently in the approval process.
