A warm August evening by the water, which there are many of in Bratislava now, turned into a tragedy. On Tuesday, August 4, shortly before 4:00 PM, the police received a report about a person who went swimming in the water near the island Sihoť and did not resurface.

Fire and Rescue Corps units of Bratislava immediately went to search. The woman was searched for from the shore, from a boat, and also with the help of a drone with a thermal imaging camera. Eventually, a group of firefighter-divers found her — at a depth of about 2.5 meters, on the bottom of the still water of Karloveské rameno, writes Bratislavské noviny.

When the woman was brought ashore, rescuers and medics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but without success. Death was confirmed by a doctor who arrived at the scene. The deceased was 46 years old.

The doctor ordered a forensic medical examination, and the police are investigating the circumstances of the incident. “The case is under investigation, we will provide more detailed information when the procedural situation allows,” said Silvia Šimková, spokeswoman for the Bratislava regional police, in a comment to Zoznam.sk. According to her, this is the only drowning case in the Bratislava region recorded by the police since the beginning of August.

Karloveské rameno is a branch of the Danube with still water, a popular place for Bratislava residents to relax in the heat. The water there is murky, the bottom uneven, and the depth can change sharply — so this place is dangerous even for those who swim well.

If you witness an emergency situation on the water — do not waste time and call 112 (the single emergency number) or 158 (police). We have collected all important emergency service phone numbers of Slovakia in a separate directory — it is worth saving it for yourself.

Rescuers remind: do not swim far in unfamiliar waters, do not enter the water after alcohol, and do not leave children near water without supervision — even for a minute.
