Popradská street (živnosť - trade/business license) is one of the main transport arteries of Košice: thousands of drivers use it daily to get to the center and neighborhoods. On Monday, August 10, large-scale repairs will begin here, and along with them, the usual traffic pattern on two city streets will change for several months.
If you travel these streets to work or use bus No. 17 — allow extra travel time starting Monday morning.
What exactly will be repaired
This is the fifth series of continuous road and sidewalk repairs in Košice under the project Rekonštrukcia komunikácií v meste Košice 2026/1 (Reconstruction of communications in the city of Košice 2026/1) with a total cost of almost 5.7 million euros. About 4 kilometers of roads will be renewed in total. The work will be carried out over four months by the Košice company Eurovia SK, which won the tender among three participants, according to the Košice city authorities.
The repair is not cosmetic: the old asphalt will be removed by milling, the base, curbs, and street drains will be replaced, and then new road and adjacent sidewalk surfaces will be laid. The city hall says this approach extends the lifespan of the roads.
The first stage starts on August 10 at two locations:
- Popradská — sections from Toryská to Trieda KVP and from Ipeľská to Trieda SNP, totaling 1.5 km;
- Zbrojničná — a 300-meter section between Moyzesova and Mäsiarska.
Next planned is the second wave: nearly 2 kilometers of Rastislavova between the Strojár hotel and Alejová, and 200 meters of Puškinova between Senný trh and Mlynská. All work should be completed by early December 2026, reports Zoznam Košice.
How traffic will change
The most restrictions will be on Zbrojničná. The section from the intersection with Baštová to the intersection with Moyzesova will be completely closed. A detour will be organized via Baštová, Poštová, and Moyzesova streets.
On Popradská there will be no full closure, but traffic will be limited to one lane — one-way only. Drivers going the opposite way are advised to take a detour via Popradská, Ipeľská, Trieda SNP, and Toryská.
Those who use public transport should know about the route change of bus No. 17 towards the Luník VIII neighborhood — due to repairs on Popradská, it will run on a changed route. The route towards Lingov remains unchanged.
What this means in practice
If your daily route goes through Popradská or Zbrojničná — check your route in the navigator on Sunday evening: popular services usually quickly update closures. Residents of areas served by bus No. 17 should check the current schedule on the carrier’s website to avoid waiting at stops where the bus temporarily does not stop.
Repaired sections will open gradually — immediately after work on each section is completed, not after the entire project finishes. So, weather permitting, by winter Košice will get four kilometers of new asphalt — and at least on these streets, there will be no need to patch potholes in spring.
