At the Vyšné Nemecké–Uzhhorod customs checkpoint, Slovak customs officers detained a bus driver from Ukraine who was attempting to smuggle dental supplies worth approximately 30,000 euros by hiding them inside an ordinary vacuum cleaner.

During a routine inspection, the driver declared only one liter of alcohol and did not list any other goods. However, while inspecting the luggage compartment, the customs officers became suspicious of the vacuum cleaner. It turned out that instead of parts, there was a hidden compartment inside.

Inside the device, they found:

  • 29 dental implants;
  • 20 sterile healing rolls.

The Slovak Financial Administration estimated the total value of the find at approximately 30,000 euros. Since the driver did not declare the goods, they were confiscated.

What is the penalty for smuggling?

Attempting to illegally transport goods across the EU border can lead to serious consequences. The Slovak Criminal Code provides for liability for violations of goods circulation regulations, especially when large quantities or covert methods are involved. Depending on the circumstances, penalties may include not only a substantial fine and confiscation but also imprisonment.

Due to the significant value of the contraband, the driver now faces criminal charges. Law enforcement agencies are already investigating the case and will determine all the details.

What to Keep in Mind When Crossing the Border

This case serves as a reminder: you are required to declare any goods not intended for personal use or whose value exceeds the limits. Attempts to conceal goods can result in their loss and legal trouble.

Slovak customs officials regularly find contraband in the most unexpected places—from car parts to household appliances. Because of this, border inspections are conducted thoroughly, and any suspicion can trigger a more thorough inspection.
