How to get a one-time allowance for a first grader in Slovakia

The Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Family of Slovakia is preparing traditional financial support for families whose children are starting school for the first time this year. In October, parents of first graders will receive an increased payment per child to help cover the costs of school supplies.

This was announced by the Minister of Labor, Erik Tomáš. According to him, the state aims to ease the financial start of the school year for families without unnecessary bureaucracy.

What does the amount consist of and when to expect the money?

The total payment amount per first grader will be 170 euros. It consists of two parts:

  • 60 euros — standard monthly child allowance (prídavok na dieťa (child allowance));

  • 110 euros — one-time financial support for buying school items.

The money will be transferred to the parents' bank accounts in October — together with the payment for September's allowance.

Automatic payment and exceptions

The main advantage of this allowance is the absence of paperwork.

For most families, no applications or certificates need to be submitted. The labor offices (úrad práce (labor office)) automatically calculate the money based on data from the central information system of the Ministry of Education.

Exception: parents who receive child allowance in another European Union country do not have the right to automatic payment. To receive the one-time 110 euro supplement in Slovakia, they must personally submit the appropriate application to the Labor Office.

The payment is provided one-time and is linked exclusively to the child's first enrollment in primary school.
