Many people believe that Sunday trips on public transportation in the Slovak capital are calm and uneventful, since passenger traffic is significantly lower on weekends than on weekdays. However, this Sunday, September 20, the situation on the roads will change dramatically due to a large-scale event—the National March for Life. As a result, [the city center will be closed off for several hours], and dozens of public transportation routes will undergo significant changes.
Where to Expect the Greatest Traffic Disruptions
Organizers and city authorities warn that the main restrictions and route changes will affect the entire city center and adjacent thoroughfares starting around midday. If you were planning a trip to the old town, a visit to shopping centers, or a weekend stroll, public transportation will operate differently:
- Tram Line 1 will take a detour via Imricha Karvaša, Radlinského, Vazovova, Krížna, Špitálska, and Nábrežie streets, skipping several regular stops.
- Tram Line 9 will change its usual route between Blumentál and Kráľovské údolie, traveling through the city center and Šafárikovo námestie.
- Bus lines 31 and 80 will temporarily shorten their routes to end at the Zochova stop.
- Bus line 39 will bypass the road closures on Štefánikova and Šancová streets, meaning that some stops in the Mýtna and Kollárovo námestie areas will not be served.
- Bus 42 between the Sokolská and Autobusová stanica stops will take a detour via Šancová, Legionárska, and Karadžičova.
- Route 44 toward Koliba will take a detour via Šancová and the Hlavná stanica area.
- Line 47 will run via Hroboňova, Pražská, Šancová, Legionárska, and Karadžičova, skipping some stops in the city center.
