Kosice, the second largest employer in the eastern capital, faced an unusual situation. Due to government consolidation measures, September 15 stopped being a day off but formally remains a public holiday. Since employees would be entitled to a 100% bonus for working on this day, the total costs for the self-government would reach 1.2 million euros. Therefore, the city management of Kosice decided to give most employees a day off and direct the saved money to repair city sidewalks and road infrastructure.

How institutions and the magistrate will work

In the magistrate itself, only the most necessary services for the population will be provided during the holiday. The first contact office together with the reception will work for visitors from 8:00 to 12:00.

On this day, only those employees whose presence is necessary for continuous operation or has proven economic and security importance will come to work. This mainly concerns municipal police officers or employees of city enterprises. Employees who actually work on Tuesday are entitled to a bonus according to the Labor Code, or they can mutually agree to replace it with time off.

Mode in schools and kindergartens

Changes will also affect families with children, as institutions subordinated to the city will not operate everywhere. The Ministry of Education issued special recommendations on this issue, and some primary schools will give students director's days off.

  • Primary schools: Eleven selected primary schools will operate in the usual mode of education.
  • Kindergartens: Fourteen kindergartens will remain open and switch to a holiday mode with combined groups. Children from other closed preschool institutions can use them if needed.

Overall, about one-third of primary schools and less than a quarter of kindergartens will operate in the city. Parents are strongly advised to follow the Edupage school program, where each institution will publish current information about education or possible days off.

How public transport and city services will work

Public transport in Kosice will adapt to the holiday mode. Most bus and tram routes will run according to the schedule valid for school holidays.

Exceptions are several specific routes going to the industrial park:

  1. Tram lines R.
  2. Bus lines RA, 21, and 26, serving the U.S. Steel area, will operate as on regular weekends.

Regarding leisure, the Kosice zoo and city sports facilities will accept visitors in the usual working mode. However, residents and guests of the city should remember that parking in the city will be paid, as on a regular working day.
