Conflicts come in many forms, but in Košice, one of them nearly led to a tragedy. Last Thursday, a 34-year-old man doused the front door of an apartment in a residential building with a flammable liquid and set it on fire.

Fortunately, the residents noticed the fire in time and were able to put it out, preventing it from spreading and causing much more serious consequences. Meanwhile, the arsonist fled the scene.

The Chase and Arrest

Police patrols, including officers from the motorized rapid response unit (pohotovostná motorizovaná jednotka), arrived immediately upon receiving the call. While one group investigated the circumstances inside the building, another began combing the surrounding area.

Thanks to witness descriptions, the police spotted a man matching the description near another house. When the suspect saw the police car, he took off running. Despite repeated calls to stop, he tried to hide from law enforcement and briefly disappeared from their sight. Eventually, the patrol officers found the fugitive in dense underbrush and apprehended him.

What punishment does the arsonist face?

A criminal police investigator has taken over the case. The 34-year-old man has been charged with attempting to commit a crime posing a public danger, as well as with damaging another person’s property. The damage to the door exceeded 700 euros. The suspect will remain in custody pending the investigation.

His actions could have had much more serious consequences. According to the Slovak Criminal Code, intentionally creating a public danger through arson that endangers human life or could cause significant property damage is punishable by imprisonment for a term of four to ten years.
