A walk through the popular Železná studnička recreational area in Bratislava could have ended in tragedy. Police bomb squads discovered an entire arsenal of World War II-era munitions there—more than 90 pieces of various types of ammunition.

This discovery serves as yet another reminder that danger can lurk right underfoot, even in well-maintained city parks.

Details of the operation at Železná studnička

During a routine operation on October 27, bomb disposal experts from the capital’s police department thoroughly searched the forest park. The search yielded more than 90 dangerous items that had remained buried since the war.

The very next day, October 28, the entire cache was carefully transported to the special military training ground at Turecký vrch. There, all the ammunition found was safely disposed of. The police released a video from the site to demonstrate the scale of the discovery.

The Legacy of War in Slovakia’s Forests

Such incidents are not uncommon in Slovakia. Every year, hundreds of pieces of unexploded ordnance are found across the country. Areas where fierce battles took place in 1944–1945 are particularly dangerous. Among these locations are the Dukla and Dargov Passes, as well as areas along the Hron River.

Experts note that old munitions do not become safer over time. On the contrary, their metal casings are subject to corrosion, which makes the detonators extremely unstable. Any careless movement, impact, or even a change in temperature can trigger an explosion.

What to Do If You Find a Suspicious Object

The police once again emphasize the rules of conduct if you find objects that resemble old munitions. Your life and health may depend on it.

  • Never touch the object. Do not attempt to pick it up, move it, or take it apart.
  • Immediately move to a safe distance. Warn others of the danger.
  • Call the police at 158. Clearly tell the operator where the object is located.

Remember that only professional bomb disposal experts should handle such objects. You can find more important contact numbers on our “Important Phone Numbers” page.
